SUNY Suffolk County Community College
Graduated in Spring 2018
I am most proud of how far I have gotten thanks to Liberty Partnerships, LPP recommended me for CSTEP and I am now a mentor to STEP students during their Saturday STEP meetings.
For the current LPP students, don’t give up when an obstacle comes your way. If you feel like you are at the lowest point, the only other place you can go is up!
Nina Zylbergerg
SUNY Orange Liberty Partnerships Program Alumni
I graduated high school June 25, 219 from Newburgh Free Academy.
I currently attend Orange County Community College Honors Program and plan on transferring to Stony Brook University in the Fall 2020.
I was an LPP student over the summer before my 7th grade, so I decided to volunteer over the school year to give back.
Some of my favorite programs that I did through LPP were the big science projects and field trips.
Liberty Partnerships opened my eyes in the field of science which I greatly appreciated. Thanks to LPP, I have wanted to become a dentist ever since I attended their summer program.
I am most proud of my academic accomplishments throughout high school and now college. I am an honors student at SUNY Orange.
My advice for current students is to keep your eyes open. If you don’t like the program, don’t shut the thought of continuing the program out. Always keep an open mind because you never know what may happen.

Studying my Chem and Stats work at Syracuse University
How did you get involved with Liberty Partnerships?
When I was a Junior in High School, LPP was offered to me and put on my schedule. I continued with LPP through my Senior Yr., as well.
Describe how Liberty partnerships shaped your life both in and out of classroom?
Through my time at PSLA, I’ve always been somewhat of an outcast, and ever since LPP, I had people now that could see my efforts and abilities. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and pushed through. I finally got the support I always gave to others that I felt I never had before. Now going to Syracuse University doin’ what I love – majoring in both Forensic Science and Psychology.
What are you most proud of?
I’m most proud of my accomplishments through High school that made me show what i was capable of, and i got into a good school because of it, while also showing my little sister there’s more to live for and not to just give up
What advice do you have for current students?
Advice I'd give to current students is, don’t be scared to ask for a bit of help and support. you can see so much more and will better understand a complicated mind set many may have like i did. but LPP helped me through my over thinking in math and made me believe more in my self. All that counts is the efforts you put in that will lead you to the future you want to pursue!!

What are you most proud of?
Proud to have graduated high school with my EMT license and having earned 18 college credits.
What advice do you have for current students?
If you’re a senior get your plans in line. Time flies your senior year. Also if anyone ever tries to doubt your ability to get a scholarship or be accepted into a certain college, don’t listen to them. Apply to as many scholarships and colleges as you can/wish to. All you can do is try! You might just surprise yourself.

Dakota Hall
SUNY Morrisville Liberty Partnerships Program Alumni
My name is Dakota Hall, I graduated high school in 2017 from Bainbridge-Guilford High School.
I am currently in the process of moving out of New York and applying for Columbia College in Missouri to obtain my bachelor’s degree in Human Services.
I originally joined liberty during middle school because my older sister was apart of the program and she always had fun stories about Liberty, not fully understanding at the time how important it would actually become in my life.
Throughout high school, I was very active in the program. I enjoyed being a peer leader for the elementary liberty students; I attended trips with them, stayed after school once a week to help my schools advocate with them, and i feel like it helped some of the kids open up to me knowing that I was just a student myself. I also attended the Albany Youth Summit my Sophomore year and was able to meet students from all over New York, I learned how to open up better and not be so afraid to let people know who I was as a person.
Liberty helped shape my life tremendously, but most importantly the staff had a huge impact on my life as well. At one point in High School, I had 3 pairs of clothes. The LPP director at the time had taken time out of her schedule to take me shopping for clothes and shoes so that I had a decent amount of clothes to wear to school. My junior and senior years were combined so that I could graduate early because I was set on dropping out of high school. If it weren’t for my advocate, Pat Yaddow, I definitely would have. She was my biggest support system throughout high school, and even still today. She saw how much potential I had to overcome all the obstacles thrown at me, and pushed me to succeed. I am forever grateful for all the opportunities that this program has given me.
I am most proud of graduating from high school, especially because I did it a year early. I had junior and senior classes combined, which was challenging but being able to have the liberty room to go to and work not only during school but also after school quite often, gave me a relaxing space to go and focus to get my work done.
I advise current students to really take full advantage of the program and all that it has to offer. Open up to your advocates, if you need help with anything they can find a way to assist you or at least point you in the direction towards help. Utilize the spaces provided by the program to not only get your work done but to feel safe and completely welcomed. Liberty will open so many doors for you, as long as you allow it to.
Community, to me, means people coming together to form a whole in times that it may be needed. Opening up to one another, willingness to be supportive in times that someone needs just a little more help, is what being a community is all about.

When did you graduate high school, and which high school did you attend?
I graduated from Nellie A. Thornton High School in June 2017.
What are you up to now?
I’m currently in the process of revising my graphic design work. I recently had a junior Pinup, when several professors from my major review my work, (since freshman year up until now, junior year) and give me feedback that will help me improve my work as a designer. As I revise my works and improve them, I will be applying to graphic design internships. I’m also the Coordinator of public affairs for the Purchase student government association.
How did you get involved with Liberty Partnerships?
I got involved with Liberty Partnerships through the Great Potential Program at my high school.
What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
I really enjoyed visiting colleges and getting to meet my peers from other great potential programs.
Describe how Liberty Partnerships shaped your life both in and out of the classroom.
It has helped me improve my public speaking skills, communication skills, taught me how to research resources that are available to me and to use them as much as possible. It has helped me become more comfortable with networking.
What are you most proud of?
I am proud of my ability to always work towards solutions when I experience a problem.
What advice do you have for current students?
My advice for current students is to ask for help. If you’re afraid or nervous about anything it’s okay to communicate that to your teachers, counselors, parents or friends because they are there to help you. Asking for help is better than wasting your time pretending to know something. It saves you time, the only nonrenewable resource we have as human beings.
What does community mean to you?
Community means an opportunity for growth. I plan to go back to my community one day and help their artistic and designer skills grow and improve so that they can be the artists and designers of the future.

I enjoyed the field trips, especially the one to Remington Arms in Ilion, New York.
Describe how Liberty partnerships shaped your life both in and out of classroom?
It shaped my life by helping me learn that different teachers use different methods. It also helped me to stay in school and graduate.
What are you most proud of?
I am proud that I graduated and was able to get my dream job as a firefighter.
What advice do you have for current students?
Don’t give up, just get it done!
Brittney Stanley

When did you graduate high school, and which high school did you attend?
I went to Groton High School and I graduated in 2018.
What are you up to now?
I currently attend St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY. I am a double major in Criminology and Psychology as well as a First Generation Scholar meaning I am the first in my family to attend college! Every week I travel to the inner city of Rochester and volunteer my time to help young students complete their homework and improve their academic, emotional and social abilities. Other times, I volunteer with other students at events in Rochester, such as the Walk to End Alzheimers. I am also a student ambassador so I give tours of campus and talk to students interested in attending the college and an Orientation Leader where I help students coming to Fisher for their first year adjust to college. I intend to study abroad in Australia in spring 2021 and once I graduate I would like to be a behavior specialist or a criminal psychologist.
How did you get involved with Liberty Partnerships?
My brother was a member of Liberty Partnerships and brought me into Mr. Pratt’s office, the coordinator for Groton at the time, and I joined shortly after!
What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
How could I choose just one? One of my favorite opportunities I enjoyed through Liberty Partnerships is the Empire Summit in Albany, New York where students in Liberty Partnerships all across New York State meet to attend workshops and participate in a weekend-long program that educates and strengthens leadership. This program increased my awareness and skills in leadership and I met peers that I still talk to today, with unique abilities, talents, and goals. Raquette Lake, the trips to Boston and Philadelphia brought students from each school together to learn, explore, attend college tours, and develop connections and memories that will last forever.
Describe how Liberty Partnerships shaped your life both in and out of the classroom.
Liberty Partnerships is one of the biggest reasons I am at college today. The program helped me whenever I didn’t understand a subject or needed more practice as well as provided me with peers, adults, and role models that made drastically positive impacts on my emotional and social life. When I broke my arm my junior year and couldn’t write, LPP helped me keep up with my academics, take the SAT, and recover. Programs such as the summer work program with Ms. Beck showed me how to make a cover letter, resume, how to present, and research colleges and degrees. Activities such as going to Albany to talk to Senator Seward about funding, introduced me to connections and opportunities I would not have had if it weren’t for the program. Liberty Partnerships taught me how to be a leader, not in the sense that I was above anybody, but that my unique skills, strengths, and abilities can be used to help and inspire others.
What are you most proud of?
I am most proud of being the first in my family to attend college and holding a 4.0!
What advice do you have for current students?
My biggest advice is to step outside of your comfort zone! Growth begins the second you step across the boundary of your comfort zone. Prior to Liberty Partnerships, I was scared of being in the spotlight and being uncomfortable, but going to leadership conventions and all the activities through Liberty Partnerships allowed me to step outside of my shell and become confident in my skills and abilities. I would not be who I am or be involved in everything at college that I am today if I hadn’t taken the first step. My second piece of advice is to get involved, which requires stepping outside of your comfort zone. Take on opportunities that come to you because they will change your life and help you find your passions, strengths, weaknesses and introduce you to amazing people and experiences. Take it from me when I say that anything is possible as long as you’re willing to be vulnerable and take the first step!
Emmanuel Marmol
CUNY Hunter Colleger Liberty Partnerships Program Alumni
I was a part of the Hunter College Liberty Partnership Program from 2015 to June 2019, and the experience was transformative and vital to my mental health. Had it not been for the wonderful people – especially Jamie and Cameron – who supported me throughout my academic journey, I would not be the self-aware and empowered person I am today. This is a chapter of my life that I will always refer to with glee.
Since I was very young, I have struggled to control my anxiety; as a result, I continuously struggle to reach my fullest potential. It is a never-ending battle for me.
My high school experience would not have been easier without the LPP keeping me in check.
The LPP provided me with the space I needed to express myself, vent, and figure out what I wanted to do. Further, the LPP indirectly taught me that it is OK to be vulnerable with others and find comfort in listening to yourself breathe.
Through the LPP, I was given many opportunities to go on trips around New York City, which helped me get out of my comfort zone and learn more about many different things. My favorite trip was to the Tenement Museum in the Lower East Side, where I learned about the living conditions of many Jewish Americans in the early 1900s and what is means to be an American from the perspective of a Jewish immigrant integrating into their new home.
The LPP helped to mold me into a more empathetic man. Because I was in the office almost every day, I would see students come in abruptly and express their feelings. Every day was a raw experience for me because I had not been used to seeing people in their unscripted state. For many of the students who dropped by the office, I leveraged my years of experience battling with depression, anxiety, and mild self-hate to advise them on the appropriate next step and connect with their humanity. Had it not been for the LPP, I would not have explored this side of myself otherwise. Empathy is a powerful tool with which to reach others – a tool that would solve many of the problems we face in society.
I sincerely hope the LPP continues to exist in schools across New York City and evolves into a national organization because every student deserves to feel safe and be heard.
As for my post-secondary education journey, I will be attending CUNY Queensborough Community College in Bayside, Queens, as an education major. My plan is to earn my associate’s degree and then transfer to a 4-year institution to earn my bachelor’s in elementary education so that I can become a credentialed teacher. I did not expect myself to take this route, but for the sake of my mental health, I must do it. Turning back is no longer an option.

When did you graduate high school, and which high school did you attend?
Graduated high school 2012 from Hostos Lincoln Academy
What are you up to now?
Now I am a data manager for LPP of Hostos and NYU.
How did you get involved with Liberty Partnerships?
I first got involved with LPP when I saw my brother hanging out in the LPP Hostos office, ever since then I have participated as much as I can throughout my middle and high school years.
What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
Swimming and Graphic design
Describe how Liberty Partnerships shaped your life both in and out of the classroom.
Through LPP I met many influential people that helped me out when in need. While the program helped me out keep me entertained after school, these people would help me form connections or just let me vent out my frustrations.
What are you most proud of?
The goals I was able to accomplish despite any failures I may have had in the road.
What advice do you have for current students?
Don’t limit yourself, look for anything that might get you motivated, and follow your heart.
Jolivia Manning
Pace University Liberty Partnerships Program Alumni
When did you graduate high school, and which high school did you attend?
I attended Excelsior Preparatory High School in Queens, New York. I graduated in June 2019.
What are you up to now?
Currently I attend Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York. I am a MLK Scholar majoring in Biochemistry with a minor in Integrated Marketing and Communications. On campus I am a member of several clubs such as Sister to Sister, Black Student Union, Caribbean Student Union and lastly, an active member of the Ithaca Achievement Program which provides support with your cohort while doing research on interesting topics. Also it is a scholarship program rewarded to first year students.
How did you get involved with Liberty Partnerships?
I attended middle school and high school in Queens New York. Unfortunately, resources like these are not readily available in this location. I was introduce to the program by my mother and to date this is one of the best decision that we made. Without this program, I would be clueless about colleges and the wide range of opportunities that are available to students like me. I have been a member for over 6 years. I started to program the summer of 8th grade.
What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
I got the opportunity to explore life not only out of Queens New York but also New York City. This is something that most teenagers living in my region does not do. Pace introduces me the Broadway Shows, parks and we don’t normally go to, college overnight trips outside of the state which includes states like Maryland, Georgia and Boston, engaging and interacting parties and College Panels where I got to hear from college students and the pathway they took to get there and academic support such as SAT Prep classes and Summer Scholars Program. I learned how to new work with college admission officers and schedule interviews to showcase exactly who I am. The information sessions I attend helped me to become more knowledgeable about the college process. I was able to have a one on one with completing my financial aid package where my questions were answered and clear direction given. The best part of it is being given that opportunity the go on a travel Aboard Program for 10 days. I spent 6 days in Paris where I got to visit amazing places such the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Palace of Versailes, Lourve Museum and in London where I visited and tour Oxford University and New College, the London Eye, Westminster, London Bridge and Claud Monet house and garden. Other places on that visit includes the Financial District and the M and M Factory where we did a tour and got an information session that high lightened my awareness about living in London and other career paths that I can take.
Describe how Liberty Partnerships shaped your life both in and out of the classroom.
To date students at my previous high school are calling me wanting to know how to go about completing their college application. The fact that I had to come out of my comfort zone and interact with students and adults that does not look like me is very rewarding. In previous years, I would be so timid to speak up and speak out whether was for myself or for others. However, after years of listening to alumni sharing their experiences, it motivated me and gave me that space to grow intellectually and socially. While attending LPP we were always encouraged to take advantage of the resources that are given to us and now in college, I am continuing along such path which is helping me to cope and figure my way forward.
What are you most proud of?
I am very proud of the opportunities LPP provided me with. I was able to travel inside as well as outside of the country but most of all being awarded with two full ride scholarships to two colleges.
What advice do you have for current students?
I would advise students to aim for a high GPA from freshman year and get involved. Take advantage of the opportunities that are provided trust the staff at Pace University Liberty Partnerships Program. Going away for college is helping me to become the individual I aspire to be and had it not been for LPP, I would have missed out on being a MLK social advocate.

SUNY Fredonia Liberty Partnerships Program Alumni
I graduated in 2013 from Olean High School. I was referred to the Fredonia Liberty Partnerships program by a school administrator. After working with the summer STAR program in the Olean City School system this past summer through Liberty Partnerships, I was given the opportunity to continue in LPP. As a result, I am back at Olean High School working in the Fredonia Liberty Partnerships program as a Student Advocate.
During high school, some of my favorite activities with the program were things involving the theatre program. The Liberty Partnerships program gave me the opportunity to work as an AmeriCorps member assisting with theatre classes and activities.
Liberty Partnerships was a place where I learned things that aren’t normally taught in a school’s curriculum. I learned how to properly interact with other people and find a solid work ethic to keep up with assigned work. Liberty didn’t just teach me things, they also gave me the extra support I needed to get through the problems and stresses that I was facing while in high school. The educational awards for the four terms of AmeriCorps membership with LPP also helped me afford to get an Associate’s degree at Jamestown Community College and then to continue my education at the University of Pittsburg at Bradford.
I am proud of the person I have become. I’ve changed a lot because of Liberty Partnerships and it’s all for the better. I realize that there are a lot of different people to interact with who can help change the way you view and treat people. I am happy to have met the people I have and to have had the experiences that I have had through Liberty Partnerships. My advice for current students is not to be afraid to ask for help. There are more than enough people out there to help you when you need it but they can’t unless they know you need help. Once you get past the fear of asking for help your world gets a lot easier and better. Liberty Partnerships has made my life better.

My favorite activities by far were the college trips. They took us to a lot of different colleges from Buffalo to Albany. The trips taught us about college life, classes, flexibility and becoming your own independent person.

Liberty Partnerships Program helped shape me in many ways. They helped me become more independent and responsible with my work in class and outside of my education at work and church. They care about your wellbeing and the people are really interesting to talk to. They take their time with you no matter how difficult a task is or how difficult you are.

I graduated from Hillcrest High School in 2016, and I am in my last year of the nursing program at Hunter College, CUNY.
I was a student in the Project Prize program through the years 2010-2016. I was referred by other students I went to middle school with, when I was in the 6th grade.
When I graduated from high school and Project Prize, I gave back to the program by volunteering in the art classes during the summer and the fall.
While I was a student in the program, I loved the art and music classes at the time. There were also a step dance class and a class that focused on introducing us to Turkish Culture & Language. We were actually interviewed by a Turkish News Team! I became so familiar that the teacher asked and the director allowed me to substitute when the teacher needed to be out. He was a Turkish Math teacher in the program. The following year, Project PRIZE had a Math tutor’s position open, and I was hired in the fall 2017, and since then I have been working as a Math tutor, instructor’s substitute, and program aid.
The math tutoring helped me to pass my high school regents. Through Project PRIZE, I was placed in a program called Pathways 2 Nursing. That was a prep program for students interested in the nursing program, and because of my participation in this program I chose Nursing as a college major. I was admitted to the Hunter College Nursing program in the fall 2016.
I am most proud of getting as far as I have. I have been struggling recently, but I’m chugging through.
My advice to middle and high school students is: Take your education seriously. And take advantage of any help that comes your way.

How did you get involved with Liberty Partnerships?
I was looking for a way to give back to the community and volunteer and saw the mentoring program was a great way to try and give back to such an awesome program that has helped me so much. I also really believe in investing in today’s youth, so whatever support I can give, I want to try and do that with my time on Earth.
What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
I remember getting so excited to learn during the summer, the health care programs during the summer really excited me and made me passionate about healthcare which led me on my journey post-high school. Also, the field trips we took gave me great experiences that I may not have otherwise had the opportunity to go to, for example, Washington, D.C.
Describe how Liberty Partnerships shaped your life both in and out of the classroom.
YSLPP gave me direction and support when I was in school and when I at times felt lost, they also always encouraged me. The people from YSLPP have also been a huge support after college ended and throughout life to help be a guiding light. Being involved in the mentoring program has been so great and has given me the opportunity to give back to a program that helped me SO much through my life. I honestly do not know where I would be if not for the Liberty Partnership program.
What are you most proud of?
I am proud of graduating college and graduate school. I am proud of becoming a PA and being able to help my family. I find that I have been able to overcome some adversity, and try always to keep persevering, even when times are tough.
What advice do you have for current students?
This sounds cliché, but you can never give up. You must lean into the supports around you when times get tough and stay positive. Life is always difficult and there will always be hurdles, no matter where you come from or what you do, but if you stay positive and work hard, it is so much easier to overcome obstacles and continue to move forward. And always stay passionate for what you believe in, find balance in life, and remember to have fun!

How did you get involved with Liberty Partnerships?
I got involved with Liberty Partnerships when I was nominated to join the YSLPP in seventh grade. From there on out, I’ve become more involved in my community by networking, getting involved in community service, and be able to keep these connections of great people.
What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
My favorite program in the Liberty Partnerships were the internships. Being able to experience the different fields of health care, business, and science, I was able to determine what path I was interested in going towards.
Describe how Liberty Partnerships shaped your life both in and out of the classroom.
Liberty Partnerships always had people to help me with my questions and needs when it comes to doing work or receiving help. Out of the classroom is a whole different story. I have a network of people who get involved in communities and help guide me through their experience and successes.
What are you most proud of?
As a student of a Liberty Partnerships, I’m proud of being able to make connections. I was first introduced to my mentor through Liberty Partnerships and he has been the drive that helps me get involved and grab the opportunities when given. If I wasn’t in the Liberty Partnerships Program, I don’t think I would be where I am today.
What advice do you have for current students?
My advice I would give to students is to start low and aim high. Make an ultimate goal for yourself and take baby steps. There’s no skipping steps when it comes to reaching your goal. If you seem to stumble off the steps, it’s ok. You can still bring yourself back onto the steps or create a new pathway towards your goal. There’s no absolute right way of doing things. Do things on your own terms and reach for the stars!

When did you graduate high school, and which high school did you attend?
I graduated in 2014 from Thomas R. Proctor High School in Utica, NY.
What are you up to now?
I am currently enrolled in a masters education program that focuses on leadership in the classroom and inclusive strategies within the classroom. I am on track to graduate this coming May. I am employed by Utica College working with my old LPP program, Young Scholars as one of the site assistants at the high school.
How did you get involved with Liberty Partnerships?
My involvement with the program started when I was nominated to become a Young Scholar student in 6th grade. Once I went through the selection process and was selected, I participated in multiple activities and events available to Young Scholars to this day.
What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
I was an active participant and completed over 150 hours of community. Programs that I participated in were, the Summer Enrichment Program (7th grade to 9th grade), Women in Math and Science, Health Internship, Colgate Seminar Sessions I & II. As well as going on college visits to UAlbany, Hartwick College, Colgate University, St. Lawrence University, Ithaca College, Syracuse University, SUNY Morrisville, and a few more. Young Scholars broaden my life experiences when we were able to visit Washington D.C and go camping in Malone, NY. The camping trip was something out of my comfort zone and it allowed me to see what limits I could push myself to as an individual. These experiences strengthened my communication and leadership skills.
Describe how Liberty Partnerships shaped your life both in and out of the classroom.
Young Scholars has molded and supported me to become the individual I am today. Throughout the experience I have gained through the program transformed a soft-spoken, shy girl with low confidence, to a young lady that is ambitious, valued, and determined. Through the exposure to a diverse set of students in my cohort and surrounding cohorts, I felt more immersed and prepared for daily encounters in my professional and personal life today. The Young Scholars Program exposed me to experiences that built up my knowledge of politics, education, and cultures. The overall program has taught me how to become a civilized young adult and has taught me how to give back to those who helped you.
What are you most proud of?
Being able to give back to the program that helped me. I currently work with the Young Scholars Program as a Site Assistant at the high school and it is nostalgic. I am proud of embodying and exhibiting the values that Young Scholars had instilled in me and being able to reflect that onto the upcoming generation. I take pride in participating in all the events that Young Scholars encouraged and being able to be a role model and goal for students in the program to achieve.
What advice do you have for current students?
Take in everything with pride and be resilient. Do not let anyone knock you down and you will always have support from your liberty partnership program because it is a family.

How did you get involved with Liberty Partnerships?
If I’m remembering correctly the program found me. I remember being so upset about going to summer school that I cried. It only took 1 day for me to change my mind. This is my shoutout to the program: You guys are awesome and the work that you do makes such an impact on the lives of these students.
What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
The list is truly endless. It ranges from subtle things like spending my study halls with the mentors to doing a summer internship at Utica College where I fell in love with the microbiology lab.
Describe how Liberty Partnerships shaped your life both in and out of the classroom.
I attribute the program to being a huge part of who I am today. The program supported me, mentored me, and believed in me during times when I needed it most. It pushed me when I wanted to quit and cheered when I didn’t. I met individuals who I can call my friends years later and received opportunities that wouldn’t have otherwise been possible. The Liberty Partnerships exposed me to volunteering (which I still do a lot of today) and taught me that success is achieved through hard work and dedication.
What are you most proud of?
I would have to say that I am most proud of where I am today. I have surpassed many personal obstacles in my life. There were times where self doubt didn’t let me believe that I could be successful. I am truly proud and honored to dedicate my future to helping individuals.
What advice do you have for current students?
Believe me when I tell you I can relate to everything you’re going through. You’re bored, frustrated, overwhelmed, and don’t see the benefits of everything right now. My best advice is to use the resources being given to you. As I approach the end of my college journey I realize how much I miss the people and help that I had in my past. With all of that being said you are responsible for where your life goes.
I’ll leave you with a quote I saw on a fitness app, ha-ha.

When I was in 7th grade, one of my friends who was active in Liberty Partnership told me about the program. She introduced me to the advocate at the time and I learned more information about the program itself and decided to fill out the paperwork to join.
What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
Throughout my time in Liberty Partnership Program I was involved in a number of activities and programs. Some of my favorite included all of the fun field trips that we went on pre-pandemic such as hockey games, ice skating, etc. I also enjoyed a number of the academic experiences as well because they helped me better prepare for when I started to look at colleges myself.
Describe how Liberty partnerships shaped your life both in and out of classroom?
Liberty Partnership shaped my life both in and out of the classroom in a number of ways. All of the advocates that I had been involved with at Unadilla Valley (Miss Stacy and Miss Sam) always made sure that their classrooms were comfortable and homey for the students that came inside and out all day. Whenever I needed someone to talk to about my day or just somewhere to hang out once I finished my homework, they always made it known that we were welcome in their room. They kept on our academics constantly by checking grades, owed work, etc. to make sure that we had everything done before we had some fun time.
What are you most proud of?
I am most proud of all of the work that I put into high school because without all of the extracurricular activities and hard classes I would not be where I am today. I went into college with a single major but then made it known that I could dual major in both things that I love because I had such an amazing network of teachers in high school.
What advice do you have for current students?
I would tell current students that academics are more important than you think they are. I didn’t realize how much of an impact that they would have on my life until I applied to different schools and realized that my academic career reflects on whether I get into my top choice of school. I would also tell students that they shouldn’t wish for high school to end, that they should enjoy the moments while they last and make memories that will last forever.

We went to NYC to see a baseball game, whitewater rafting and we traveled out west to visit the museum of play, along with several college stops.

I am a foster mother for Northern Rivers, and I am working as a Senior Claim Representative for American National.
I entered into Liberty Partnerships when I was in 9th grade due to academic struggles and struggles with my home life which had an impact on school. I stayed involved with Liberty Partnerships through graduation and then did an internship with Liberty Partnerships for my associates degree.
Liberty Partnerships helped me focus on my school work and strive to be the best I can be! Outside of the classroom I was able to develop lasting relationships and develop self confidence to develop my life and a successful path.
I am most proud of my success in graduating and continuing my education with a completed bachelors degree and continued education in my career. Without the support I had from Liberty Partnerships I do not believe I would have been as successful as I have been.
Be the best version of yourself! Stay focused and determined and you can succeed!

I was accepted into SUNY Albany and have been studying Electrical and Computer Engineering there. My classes have been good, and I’ve made a ton of new friends here!
How did you get involved with Liberty Partnerships?
I believe in freshman or Sophomore year in high school a teacher approached me about an opportunity for a summer program at IONA College. I (thankfully) agreed and attended said summer program. I immediately fell in love with LPP. Two years later I was asked to attend the Youth Summit held every year, and had the time of my life!
What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
Definitely the youth summit I was so lucky to attend two years in a row. I had so much fun both times, and learned some valuable things on how to be successful to and through college and beyond
Describe how Liberty Partnerships shaped your life both in and out of the classroom.
In the classroom, one of LPP’s partner programs, YPIE, has singlehandedly saved my life. YPIE (Yonkers Partners In Education) is a free program that aids students in the college application process. Had it not been for my college advisor, I wouldn’t be where I am today and I am so grateful. Outside the classroom, LPP has held many great programs over the summer and they’ve honestly helped me to become not only a more successful person, but a leader in my community.
What are you most proud of?
Probably, with the help of YPIE and LPP, getting accepted into a really good school, and not only that, but getting accepted into the specific engineering program I wanted. All with a very good Scholarship.
What advice do you have for current students?

What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
My favorite activities was the summer activities. These kept me very busy and connected with other LPP students. I also enjoyed visiting Mrs Butterfield in school. If you’re unsure about your path or you lack confidence in yourself for the future, go see Mrs Butterfield (or LPP supervisor) they are life changers for sure! I will never forget mine! Students without good support systems and/or involved parents will thrive off being in the program.

I graduated in 2015 from Morristown Central as the Salutatorian
I recently graduated from SUNY Potsdam with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Philosophy. Currently, I’m a DSP at United Helpers. I’m also enrolled in University at Buffalo School of Social Work Online Part Time degree program, Class of 2022, to earn my masters in social work.
In high school, I became involved with the Liberty Partnership Program through my friends. They were all involved with the program and as a result I joined as well.
During my time with LPP I loved going to the local colleges and learn what amazing degree programs that they had to offer. We often went to SUNY Potsdam, which influenced my decision to go to Potsdam.
Liberty Partnership Program influenced my life by allowing me to become involved with my community at a young age. I learned what it was like to fill out a resume, go through mock job and college interviews, giving me the skills to succeed.
I’m most proud of my academic success; I was able to graduate the top of my class from Morristown, graduated with honors from my undergraduate degree program, and obtain admission to an extremely prestigious masters program.
Advice wise, I would say it’s the little things that matter; if you succeed in high school, then you can go to college. If you go to college and make connections, there’s absolutely no reason for you to not succeed.

SUNY Canton Liberty Partnerships Program Alumni
I graduated high school in 2018, I attended Ogdensburg Free Academy.
Currently I am attending SUNY Potsdam, I am majoring in Environmental Studies, and minoring in wilderness education. I am also a manager in training at Taco Bell.
I got involved in LPP when I was in 7th grade, LPP just started at my school and Renee contacted me and explained what it was about, I attended some of the field trips and instantly fell in love with the program, and what it had to offer me.
Some of my favorite activities/ programs that I was involved in through the program was the college visits, they really helped me figure out where and what I wanted to do before the time actually came. I was able to see what every college had to offer. I also enjoyed attending Aero-space camp every summer, I learned a lot and was able to attain future contacts with professors/ doctors. Another program I was really thankful for was the mentored work program, I was able to volunteer at different locations for 20 hours, doing this gave me an idea of what I did/did not want to do as an occupation later on in life, and I was able to work for money to put away for college.
Liberty Partnerships shaped my life in and out of the classroom by showing me how to prepare myself for the “real-world”. I learned the importance of time management and seeking help whether for my assignments or my own personal needs.
Out of all of my achievements, what I am most proud of is how far I have come so far in my journey of life, 5 years ago I was on the verge of dropping out of school and doing nothing. Now I am in my second year of college and becoming a manager at the age of 19. LPP showed me that even if you don’t come from a great background, working hard really does pay off and that you really can achieve what you want if you have a positive mind set and try your hardest.
A piece of advice that I have for current students would be that if you are struggling don’t keep it to yourself, talk to people, they are there to help you not drag you down, go to class and do your assignments it may seem terrible in that moment but a year from then you’re going to think back and say “that wasn’t so bad I could of tried a lot harder”. The last piece of advice I have is to try new things, join sports and clubs, you never know what you like until you try it and even if you try something and don’t enjoy it, you now have a better understanding of your likes and dislikes for down the road.

Buffalo State College LPP
When did you graduate high school, and which high school did you attend?
I graduated from McKinley H.S in Buffalo NY in 2009.
What are you up to now?
In May I graduated from Canisius College with my master’s degree in School Counseling. I have been a Program Counselor with LPP Buffalo State College for 4 years and I love everything about it! I love what LPP stands for, and I love that I get to be a mentor and counselor for students just like me!
How did you get involved with Liberty Partnerships?
I got involved with LPP starting my freshmen year in high school. My Aquatic Ecology teacher at the time was heavily involved with LPP and pushed me to try LPP out. It was the best move I made. Coming from the City of Buffalo made it difficult to experience things outside of my comfort zone. LPP made it possible for me to step outside the box and find out who I was. If it wasn’t for LPP I would have never went away and experienced the true authentic college experience.
What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
My favorite activities were the college visits! One of those being Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua. I fell in love with this school and had the best 2 years of my life. We also visited colleges such as Cornell, which made me realize the world was bigger than just Buffalo. I also am thankful for the help I received with my college applications and of course the tutoring services. We also had the opportunity to do a lot of outdoor activities which was awesome.
Describe how Liberty partnerships shaped your life both in and out of classroom?
LPP is like no other. While everyone else struggled in school, I was able to seek out tutoring services. While everyone else was stuck in their comfort zone, LPP pushed me to look beyond that. It provided me with a mentor and counselor who believed in me. I later transferred to Buffalo State College and worked as a tutor for LPP. I struggled at BSC trying to figure out the path I wanted to take in my life. Still through it all, LPP was present for me as a college student. It led me on a path to find myself. After completing my bachelors, I took a year off. LPP still supported me and a year later I found myself back in the LPP office. Only this time pushing students like myself to be successful.
What are you most proud of?
I am most proud of the woman I have become and the way LPP helped shape me. I am most proud that no matter what trials and tribulations crossed my path I stuck through it all, with so much support! I am proud to represent LPP. I am proud to take this journey with LPP as we become better every year. I am proud to tell my students that no matter what, I am here to support them, motivate them and advocate for them.
What advice do you have for current students?
I would say believe in yourself! Remember that someone out their believes in you, so do not push those people away. It doesn’t matter who you are, where you come from, or what you look like. There is a place in this world for you. When you have programs such as LPP, take advantage of them. You and only you control your future. So, when you take control of it, and work hard towards it, no one can take that away from you.

I graduated McKinley Vocational High School June of 2008. I believe this is correct it was the same time as Augustine if the dates don’t match.
I am currently living in Houston, TX with my wife and two children. I am working as an Business analyst for Cigna Medicare.
I got involved with Liberty Partnerships around the end of 8th grade year at school #31. It was the summer before my freshman year of high school. I was asked to attend the program for the summer by a teacher named whose name I cannot recall. I was told I would get the opportunity to learn new things, go on field trips and even earn a stipend. Who could say no to that experience?
Wow, where do I began Liberty Partnerships has shaped my life in the classroom many of ways. 1. By offering me the extra help for class courses I struggled in. If I didn’t quite grasp the concept of Chemistry or Algebra during school hours I had somewhere to come and get the help at the program after school. 2. Offering me courses I may not have been exposed to during my usual courses at school ie film study or music industry insight. Liberty also offered accredited college courses to give me insight on what the workload would be like on pursuing the next level of education. Liberty has not only done those things but also guided me every step of the way during my college application process in to which I attended Shaw University the first HBCU of the south and exposed me to college campus life prior. From various field trips to the colleges/universities within the SUNY/CUNY college area. I believe the Liberty Partnerships Program was instrumental in showing and involving us in those things that interest us in pursuing a college degree.
Outside of the classroom liberty has given me countless life long friendships. A lot of my peers I attended the program with during my tenure I am still in contact with to this day. Not only that but Liberty has helped me with writing resumes to apply for jobs and identify what employers look for when reviewing them. Mock interviews for jobs and the list goes on. Liberty provides a safe haven away from home to students who can come and not only express themselves but engage in opportunities they may not be afforded without the program. From volunteering and Community service projects to fun events like broadway plays and Darian Lake liberty does it all.
The advice that I would give current students in the program would be to get involved, participate and take advantage of the countless opportunities the program provides. Continue to make memories, life long friendships and be mindful of your future as Liberty is a great tool to help shape you into your future self. Lastly I would also challenge them to find a mentor.

LP taught me that it’s the little things that can change someone’s life, like painting a mural in the Saratoga Housing complex; bringing light to the community and making people smile as they walk past it. The same goes for the clothing drive we did. It was nothing for us to take the time out to do things like this, but it meant the world to others and it made an impact bettering our community. Positive quote: “To plant the seed of the tree, even if you won’t be able to sit under its shade.” I use this quote as a reminder to myself that all my past mentors have spent hours of investing their time, resources, and currency with nothing to base their investment off of but hope. Hope that I would graduate high school, hope that I would excel through college, and hope that I would become a functional and active citizen in today’s society. Without that investment and without that blind faith that I would turn out be a functioning member in our society, as the saying goes “I would not be where I am today.” Liberty Partnerships provided me with some of those mentors, and even though I don’t spend any time with them now, I hope that they would be proud of the strong “tree” that they assisted in planting all those years ago.

What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
We did many beautification projects including a mural and erecting a barn. In our local communities when I was a senior, I was interviewed by the Press and Sun Bulletin about the Liberty Partnerships Program.
Describe how Liberty Partnerships shaped your life both in and out of the classroom.
I had an amazing Counselor, Diane Crews, who helped me stay on track to graduate by helping me with a large amount of turmoil that was happening in my life outside of school in my Junior and Senior Year. She collaborated with a number of teachers to help me get the extra help I needed to pass some regents classes and exams. Without Diane’s guidance and strong support, I would not have graduated high school or got my Regents Diploma.
What are you most proud of?
I am very proud of the fact that I did graduate High school and went on to put myself through College, graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree and was later able to come back and work for the program that helped me so much during those formative years. I now get the chance to see all the students that have been helped through our program and all the achievements that have happened because of the guidance and support of LPP.
What advice do you have for current students?
My advice is to “go after your dreams” You can do it. College is a reality that you can achieve and do not let any person or situation hold you back. You can achieve what you set out to do and do great things.
What does community mean to you?
Community to me is like a family. That is what Liberty represents. Each partnership that is built from the University, Middle and High schools, Teachers, Academic Counselors, and mentors, comes together as a community to help those who need it. I am proud to say that Liberty Partnerships Program has been my family for 30 years.

What are you up to now?
Currently I am on a year leave after attending Rochester Institute of Technology for 2 years. If not for Covid I had no intention of ever taking off but after some insanely stressful times thanks to Covid I took 2 semesters off to gather my bearings and I’ll be back as soon as I can!
How did you get involved with Liberty Partnerships?
LPP was an option when I was in middle school at Olympia, I was in 7th grade I believe and I joined the program with a few friends of mine and ended up making connections that have lasted till today even if I was only involved in the program for 2 years.
What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
I always enjoyed attending Imagine RIT with the LPP group, we’d tour RITs campus and explore what the students there had to offer. From there I knew that RIT was the school for me! And sure enough years later I was happier than ever receiving my acceptance letter.
Describe how Liberty partnerships shaped your life both in and out of classroom?
Thanks to LPP, I was quickly introduced to a major goal of mine, which was to attend RIT. Through the friendly guidance of our mentors I felt driven to get the best possible grades I could and help reach the outcome I desired. Had I not been apart of LPP perhaps I would have never attended RIT in the first place and my life could have veered off in a completely different direction.
What are you most proud of?
I’m proud of the fact I have survived everything I’ve ever been through. My life has been far from easy yet despite that I never wallowed in pity wishing my life was better, I instead took the steps forward to ensure my life would be better. As a first generation college student I’m incredibly proud to be alive today to see myself make history within my own family and set the foundations for an ever better life for possible future generations.
What advice do you have for current students?
My advice is to not care about what other people think of you. School itself can be challenging but the social aspects of navigating middle and high school are a whole other beast. Just keep working towards your own betterment and don’t listen to what negative voices have to say about you. Kindness shines through always, keeping good company while also being good company yourself will get you far further than biting remarks ever will. Work towards your goals and sure enough they’ll be within reach before you even know it.

Enjoy the time and recognize that the eventually it will be over and then you will only have memories to fondly look back on.

When did you graduate high school, and which high school did you attend?
I graduated Spring 2016 from Greece Olympia High School!
What are you up to now?
I am currently a senior at Cornell University majoring in Biology and Society and my expected graduation is August 2020! After I graduate, I plan to gain experience in the medical field by working in a clinical setting while finishing up pre-medical requirements! After this, I hope to continue on to medical school! Exciting!
How did you get involved with Liberty Partnerships?
I got involved with Liberty Partnerships as a freshman in high school, simply by hearing about the opportunities available to me through the program. As I got older and developed relationships with the LPP coordinators at Greece Olympia, I started to get more involved, and everything snow-balled from there!
What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
Some of my favorite activities through the program included the personal and professional workshops! I truly felt like I learned more about myself, how the professional world works, and how to carry myself as I became older and more involved in the work environment! I also really enjoyed the college tour trips, even though I didn’t end up going to a college we toured, I truly got a better idea of admissions criteria, the importance of looking at both location and college degree programs, and most importantly, what I wanted for myself at college!
Describe how Liberty Partnerships shaped your life both in and out of the classroom.
I could write an entire paper on this question! I truly believe that LPP gave me a community at school to be myself in, and to be positively reinforced for it! It was a safe space for me, which is so important at the time, and I loved being able to go there and get away from things while also growing as an individual. Being in LPP made me realize that I could unapologetically be myself, and I didn’t have to feel ashamed for that! It allowed me to realize what was important in my life at the time, and I will forever be indebted to LPP for that.
What are you most proud of?
This is a very loaded question and can be answered in so many ways! With regards to what I am most proud of having received from LPP, I would really say it is the relationships I developed with the coordinators, they are truly amazing people and have shown that they really care about my well-being, and where I end up in life. I have learned so much from them, and forging relationships with them has helped build my confidence and faith in myself. Those are relationships I’ll never be able to replace! In terms of what I am most proud of about myself/ my journey, I have had a lot of ups and downs at Cornell, and it has truly changed who I am. There are so many ways in which Cornell is great, and by great, I mean the opportunities it provides for its students and the resources available, but it can also be very toxic and mentally straining. I am very proud of myself for maintaining faith in myself throughout my academic career and pushing through all of the negativity, the sense of imposter syndrome, and even sometimes the shame imposed on by students, and at times professors. There is always a way in life, and I am so proud of myself for realizing this in every step of my journey.
What advice do you have for current students?
Advice I would offer for current LPP students is be willing to take criticism. Some of the most radical changes I have made in my life have been due to advice/constructive criticism I received from friends, academic advisors, and even professors; keep in mind that none of the advice was what I really “wanted to hear”. Sometimes it takes a kick in the pants to really make changes in how you live your life, but be receptive to this advice, and value the fact that you have people who truly care enough to give you criticism!

What are you up to now?
I am currently the Director of the Liberty Partnerships Program at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, NY providing student centered supports to ten middle schools and high schools within Syracuse City and LaFayette Central School Districts.
How did you get involved with Liberty Partnerships?
During high school, a lot of my friends were program participants which led me to inquire about the services and supports offered. It was one of the best decisions I made while attending Corcoran.
What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
During my time in the LPP, the focus was academic success and improvement. I appreciated the consistent help available during the school day and after school. LPP helped connect me to my mentor, Mr. Tony Brown. Also, it kept me connected to my peers in a safe and structured environment each day.
Describe how Liberty Partnerships shaped your life both in and out of the classroom.
Good help is hard to find. LPP was a reliable branch of my support system and it helped reinforce the notion of work hard and play later. That mindset helped me achieve success beyond what I envisioned was possible. Being the hardest worker in the room is an ingrained belief that travels with me everywhere.
What are you most proud of?
Making my parents and family proud. I defied the odds. I should have given up a long time ago. Entering college straight out of high school, I placed into five (5) non-credit classes at Onondaga Community College. Fast forward, I finished my formal collegiate education earning a total of five degrees (A.A.S., B.S., M.S., M.A., with the last being a Doctorate in Education (Ed.D.) in Executive Leadership. Sharing my story with learners of all ages is very humbling because my gift is not about me!
What advice do you have for current students?
Own who you are. Be authentically you. Work for what you want. You are 1 of 1. Strive to be more than just the flavor of the month. Be committed to the challenge of being great. Do not be embarrassed, ashamed or afraid to ask for help when you need it.
What does community mean to you?
Community is connectedness. Community is love and learning. Community is hope and inspiration. Community is service and sharing. Community is accountability and responsibility. Community is welcoming and safety. Community is growth and improvement.

How did you get involved with Liberty Partnerships?
I’ve been in the liberty program since I was in the 7th grade at Gaskell. As a kid I originally only went for snacks but I stayed a lifetime and I’m so happy and honored I did. Liberty has literally watched me grow into the woman I am today and without liberty there’s so many things I wouldn’t have accomplished.
What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
Liberty has taken us to New York City numerous times. I’ve had my first boat ride, seen the Statue of Liberty, I even got to perform a spoken word in Albany thanks to Liberty. The amazing shake was another memorable moment, although I didn’t win I got far and met the mayor. It was fun getting dressed up and learning proper etiquette, I remember feeling so grown with my friends. I taught my classmates a salsa dance that we got to perform before which I was fun. We also made 2 music videos and songs which are as so fun! Liberty and I have so many memories from poetry to murals and trips Liberty was the family I never had.
Describe how Liberty partnerships shaped your life both in and out of classroom?
I was a troubled youth and Liberty seen the potential in me. Liberty gave me a reason to come to school everyday, they helped me feel like I had purpose even when my own teachers would tell me how much of a failure id be. I didn’t have any friends so joining liberty made me feel like I had friends and at the time I never knew these people would evolve from friends to becoming family. Liberty was my home. Taking everything liberty taught me in the real world I now know my worth and I know the underdogs truly can come out on top. They showed me how beautiful I truly am and groomed all of my positive traits so I can stand at my full potential.
What are you most proud of?
I’m proud of myself for never giving up. I ended up not graduating but I got my GED and I truly believe if I didn’t have liberty I would’ve just given up completely. I was president of the Youth City Council as well which is another accomplishment I’m proud of. Not everybody can say they’ve done that.
What advice do you have for current students?
There’s going to be a lot of people who don’t believe in you and when you need help the most there’s going to be people who would rather laugh than help you. Know that there’s resources for you. Don’t give up on yourself, your future, or the people that genuinely care for you. Life is tough so be tougher.

I graduated from Niagara Falls High School in June 2019
I’m attending Niagara County Community College in the Liberal Arts program and plan to transfer soon into the Radiologic Technologist program.
In middle school, I was looking for help with schoolwork and my school recommend the Liberty program.
Liberty had a lot of fun things to do. We took a lot of field trips. We did a lot of plays and projects that were meaningful to history. My favorite activity would have to be when we made a song about liberty. I would never forget the experience with recording the song.
Liberty helped shape me. I think outside the box more and I am more open-minded. With any type of work, I give it my all and I learned to communicate more and be active in activities.
I’m most proud of my perseverance. In my life, I went through a lot of stuff, up and downs with school and family, but I still kept going. I graduated from high school and I also plan on graduating from college.

I am most proud of changing my life around in school and graduating on time from High School.
What advice do you have for current students?
My advice is that Liberty is there to help you. They have helped me to change my life around. Don’t goof around with school. It’s good to have friends in school but they are not going to help you pass your classes, your exams, or help you succeed in school, and definitely not going to help you graduate. It all starts with YOU! School is more important than anything and having a high school diploma will make you feel like you can do anything with your life. You can be whoever you want to be. You choose what road you want to take; the easy road or the hard road; it all starts with YOU!

I am also a John Jay Pinkerton Fellow where I have worked with incarcerated youths for 12 months, and anticipate to complete my master’s degree in public policy soon. Pinkerton is a justice-based fellowship instituted by the Prisoner Reentry Institute at John Jay for undergraduate and graduate students.
How did you get involved with Liberty Partnerships?
LPP was located on the second floor within my high school. As a Gateway Honor student in CBHS, I had started to get enrolled in challenging courses like pre-statistics, AP government, AP Biology, etc. I saw their office while walking through the hallway and sought out tutoring to keep up with those classes. LPP had the qualified staff to assist me. It was more, importantly, very convenient for me. I did not have to travel outside of Barton and I was able to get tutoring even during my lunch period.
What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
I loved the travels to important institutions like Howard University, the Whitney plantation, the National Voting Rights Museum & Institute, the African Burial Ground Museum, the United Nations, and even the White House. Since I did not travel much in High school, these were important because they expanded my horizon. I experienced the Black experience of our ancestors which made me very culturally aware and even learned of Blacks of different classes. I remembered seeing highly educated Blacks individuals and neighborhoods. As a teenager, this inspired me to be more because I was not used to seeing lots of people who look like me in those brackets in my neighborhood.
Describe how Liberty Partnerships shaped your life both in and out of the classroom.
The academics were important, but what I am still utilizing today is the little things like professional manners that the LPP staff pointed out to me at a young age. LPP taught me to firmly shake hands while looking at the person’s eyes. They taught me how to publicly speak and not be intimidated. They taught me how to confidently advocate and stand up for myself in the presence of authority. I noticed that many students lacked these basic soft skills even in college. Because of that, I have been able in some sense to stand out from the crowd so far.
What are you most proud of?
I had gotten a 98 out of 100 on my U.S history regents. LPP played a significant role as I was able to practice the test with them months prior. I was proud because this was the highest of all my state exam scores and among the highest in the school. I remembered that I had the feeling that I could accomplish it all.
What advice do you have for current students?
Getting involved outside the classroom is just as important as the grades gained from within the classroom. Grades will surely get you into schools. 4 years later, however, I do not utilize the theories learned from high school. What still matters today are the social skills, the significant relationships, and the network that I gained through extra-curricular activities. Extra-curricular activities allow you to meet people ahead of you in life. These are the people who will share opportunities with you in the real world. Most often, the students next to you are in the same boat as you. My first W-2 job as a tutor, while I was a senior in high school, presented itself through extra-curricular activities.

The advice I would give to current students would be, invest on yourself. Do things that will benefit your mental/physical health, and your career.

When did you graduate high school, and which high school did you attend?
I graduated high school in 1995. That was in Jamaica (West Indies). I received an official NY State GED Diploma in 1996 from Arlington High School /BOCES GED Program.
What are you up to now?
I am currently a Supervisor, a Sanctuary model trainer, and a Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Trainer at the Children’s Home of Poughkeepsie.
How did you get involved with Liberty Partnerships?
I got involved with Liberty Partnership after orientation at the Poughkeepsie Middle school from my children. LPP’s purpose was intriguing and I knew that the program would benefit my children while I was at work.
What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
I really enjoy all the programs that Liberty has to offer. My favorite one was the Empire Promise Youth Summit in Albany. I enjoyed the trip. I liked the interaction with other parents. The facilitators were so welcoming. I also had the opportunity to see the students and staff at Marist doing different projects. I also visited colleges, which helped advance my boys’ awareness and perspectives on education.
Describe how Liberty Partnerships shaped your life both in and out of the classroom.
Liberty has shaped my life in a positive way. I am able to attend Marist College because the program helped my children to complete their homework while I am in class or at work. The program has motivated me to become more of a role model to my children and there is no other joy that can fill my heart. I want them to follow in my footsteps.
What are you most proud of?
I am most proud of my consistency and determination to earn my degree. I am not hungry for success; I am starving for success. I am proud of myself that even though I am at the age where I should have been through with college, I am still working towards graduating from college. I am proud to be a first generation college student and a mother of four young men.
What advice do you have for current students?
My advice to current students is that education is the key to establishing a positive future. Time waits on no one so procrastinating should not be a word that lingers in your minds. Students should listen to their parents, teachers, and supporters etc. These people can come off as being annoying, but reality is that they have already experienced the aftermath of bad decisions and they are only trying to guide you to a different path. Life is a lesson, but how you prepare yourselves to retain the information that was given, makes your journey become positive or negative.
What does community mean to you?
Community means having resources and influential people to guide one through their place that they call home. Having an advocate, a voice when you cannot be heard, people that share a common interest with you. Community is having people that can guide you and knowing when they should reach out or when they should find resources to meet ones basic needs.

When did you graduate high school, and which high school did you attend?
I graduated from Poughkeepsie High School in June 2016.
What are you up to now?
I am currently a senior at Marist. I will be graduating in May 2020. My major is Communication- Public Relations. My minor is in Psychology. I am currently working at Greystone as a mentor (similar to a home care aide). I recently got a job as the new Community Health Promoter with Planned Parenthood.
How did you get involved with Liberty Partnerships?
My brother who is a year older than me was involved with Liberty since he was in the 7th grade. Then, I would go to a lot of the functions held by Liberty and I got involved. Ms. Kenney, the former High School Coordinator, became like a second mom to me and eventually my mentor.
What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
I really enjoyed the different college tours that we did. I also liked that we volunteered with the homeless once or twice. We also had tutoring and I enjoyed that because I got my homework done, and made new friends. I made friends with some tutors who eventually became my life friends when I got to Marist.
Describe how Liberty Partnerships shaped your life both in and out of the classroom.
In the classroom, my life got shaped in the sense that I took away better study methods/tactics from the tutors and I learned better leadership qualities. Outside of the classroom, my life was shaped in the sense that again my leadership qualities were enhanced. I gained some great connections for when I attended Marist. I also gained a bunch of new friends and learned different life qualities too.
What are you most proud of?
I am most proud of the fact that I am going to be graduating in May and that I got this incredible job with Planned Parenthood. My supervisor is locking me in for a permanent position once I graduate. This means that I will have a job in either in the community or in Public Relations with Planned Parenthood set once I graduate.
What advice do you have for current students?
Some advice would be to stay focused and keep your eyes on the prize. Yes, it is very important to get involved in the school and community, but remember that you are going into the real world by yourself. No one is going to be there, so you need to focus on yourself and not worry about anything or anyone else. Brush little things off and keep going until you reach your goal. Never give up!
What does community mean to you?
To me community means to get involved with the place you live in, give back to the place in which you grew up in or get to know your neighbors. Do not stay a stranger, get out there, and get involved. Also it means to be heard and be noticed.

How did you get involved with Liberty Partnerships?
In mid- 9th grade, an LPP representative came to talk my class. However, I didn’t take it seriously until the late 9th grade when I actually joined the program. From then on, the program became ingrained in my lifestyle to the point that when the program wasn’t meeting that day I would be sad. I took a leadership role in my senior year. I ran as Vice President along with my friend for life, Fernanda who ran as President. She is also a Marist College student.
What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
I liked the trips and places we visited. Also, I liked having speakers coming to talk to us. That was very fun.
Describe how Liberty Partnerships shaped your life both in and out of the classroom.
Liberty Partnerships Program let me know that there are people who want me to succeed in life no matter what the cost.
What are you most proud of?
I’m most proud that I took the leap and joined the program because I met my closest friends who are still with me to this day. I am also proud of getting accepted into Marist College with scholarships from the LPP. I am proud to say that I was part of the Marist Liberty Partnerships Program.
What advice do you have for current students?
There are people encouraging you to succeed and they care about your success even when you don’t. Don’t let those people down. Keep your head up and keep and keep working hard towards anything you choose.
What does community mean to you?
To me it means people who are there for you and constantly remind you that if there’s anything you need that they can help; you just need to call them. It also means an extension of family to be there when you need them most.

I attended Poughkeepsie High School and graduated in 2019.
What are you up to now?
I now am a freshman at Marist College and I am majoring in Early Childhood Education.
How did you get involved with Liberty Partnerships?
My older sister was a part of Liberty, so once I got into high school, I also joined. Overall, I knew about Liberty since I was in middle school.
What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
My favorite activities with Liberty were when we would attend college tours. This was one of my favorite activities because I was able to learn more about different colleges. Another activity that I enjoyed was when I got the chance to attend Pre-College at Marist and take a history course over the summer. This would have never happened if it wasn’t for Liberty giving me the opportunities.
Describe how Liberty Partnerships shaped your life both in and out of the classroom.
Liberty has shaped my life in the classroom because the tutors were able to help me with my homework and with any difficulties that I had in class. They also prepared me for college, which in my opinion, was a good opportunity. Liberty has also helped me outside of the classroom because I was able to make connections towards other important resources.
What are you most proud of?
I am proud that I am able to attend Marist College and get the opportunity to show off my skills that Liberty has helped me get. I am also proud that I am the second person in my family to attend college.
What advice do you have for current students?
My advice that I would give towards current students is to continue to work hard and that everything will be paid off later. In other words, nothing is going to be easy in life. If you want to succeed, you must put the effort. It is also important to take the opportunities that are given; every little help can go a long way.
What does community mean to you?
The word community, in my opinion, means family. It means that everyone will help you because they want to see you succeed. Community means teamwork and opportunity for new different ideas.

What are you up to now?
I am a 5th year Mechanical Engineering student at RIT, looking forward to graduating in May of 2020. I already have a full-time job lined up with Lockheed Martin located in Syracuse, NY, which I will start in August of 2020.
How did you get involved with Liberty Partnerships?
I got involved with Liberty Partnerships Program starting my Junior year in high school. My girl friend was part of it, and she told me that it was very helpful as they bring tutors to help you with basically any subject you needed help with. I decided to give it a shot and applied. It was not that hard to get into that program being a hard-working student.
What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
One of my favorite activity through the LPP program was being involved in the MOST rocket competition. I had always wanted to be an engineer, and getting that exposure starting my Junior year through this program really helped me decide the kind of engineer I wanted to become. I participated in the competition my junior and senior years. Both years, we came in first place.
Describe how Liberty partnerships shaped your life both in and out of classroom?
This program brought tutors for every subject. English was not my favorite subject in high school, especially college English course. The tutors that were there were very knowledgeable and helped me with my essays for the course. Not only that, they also helped me edit my college essay. The program taught me to give back to the community, help those who are struggling. With this lesion learnt from this program, I am currently a personal tutor for circuits course here at RIT and an active volunteer of a soccer club called Tillie’s Touch.
What are you most proud of?
I am most proud of this life. The journey I had from a refugee camp in Nepal to the United States of America. I am proud to be attending Rochester Institute of Technology with a full scholarship. Finally, I am proud of myself for landing a full-time job at Lockheed Martin, which is one of the best engineering firms in the United States.
What advice do you have for current students?
To current students,
Do not be afraid to take challenges. I know most of you come from a third world country; fleeing war, poverty, inadequate health care, but now you are in a better place. Be thankful of the opportunities you get and take them on. Do all your homeworks ahead of time, participate in extra activity, study for your exams, study for SATs, and work hard every day. If you do these things, there is no doubt that one day, you will all be very successful.

When did you graduate high school, and which high school did you attend?
I graduated from Nottingham High school in 2015.
What are you up to now?
I graduated from RIT in May 2019. I am currently on my gap years, working full time, and preparing for Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT). I plan on applying to medical school to pursue my dream of becoming a Physician.
How did you get involved with Liberty Partnerships?
I moved from Raleigh, NC, during my junior year in high school. I was new to Nottingham and did not know much about colleges in NY. I decided to challenge myself by taking advance level courses to be well prepared for the rigors of college academics. LPP staffs provided me with tutoring services for difficult classes, helped me better understand my college applications, looked over my essays, and provided me with beneficial feedbacks.
What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
Some of my favorite activities through LPP includes building a rocket for a rocket challenge competition with few of my classmates. We had a lot of fun building it and actually came 2nd in the competition twice. I also remember traveling to Albany as a student advocate to share my views on what LPP program and its resources mean to students like me. I loved going on college tours and being able to shadow college students. We also went on a Boston trip, where we visited many historic places and ate delicious food.
Describe how Liberty Partnerships shaped your life both in and out of the classroom.
As a result of being in this program, I had a chance to familiarize myself with resources outside of class, attend college visits, receive mentorship from college students and LPP staffs, make new friends and network.
What are you most proud of?
When I first came to the US as a refugee, it was a difficult transition for me. I did not speak much English then. Once I started school in Raleigh, I was getting used to its school environment and made new friends. When my family decided to move to NY, I was scared that I might have difficulties adjusting in a new school as a junior and had fears of missing out on resources for my college applications. I am most proud that even after such a huge transition, I still did not feel like I missed anything. Programs like LPP provided me with resources that helped me strengthen my academics, be involved in activities outside of a classroom. These activities ultimately helped me become a successful college applicant and get admitted to one of the best colleges in NY as a first-generation student on a Scholarship.
What advice do you have for current students?
My advice to the new students is to never doubt yourself no matter where you came from. You can’t change anything about your past or the conditions you grew up in, but you can always change your future with hard work and resilience. Always have courage to get yourself out of your comfort zone because that’s where you will get to experience/learn new things. Ask for help when you need it. Stay focused and curious. Be creative. Be involved in extracurriculars. Meet new people who share similar vision and expand your network. Sometimes you will make mistakes, don’t get discouraged by it. Learn from them.

I had a great time being a part of Liberty Partnerships. If I had to pick top three of my favorite activities/programs, it will be the Empire Promise Summit, Trips to NYC and Adirondack, and Liberty Partnerships graduation ceremony.
Describe how Liberty Partnerships shaped your life both in and out of the classroom
Liberty Partnerships helped me to stay focus and hold myself accountable in terms of grades, homework assignments and my behavior throughout my high school career. I am grateful that I got to be a part of this program because it really gave me the opportunity to realize my true potential in terms of leadership and who I am as a person.
What are you most proud of?
I am proud of a lot of things when it comes to Liberty Partnerships, but I am most proud of the opportunities that I was given by the program because of the person I chose to be.
What advice do you have for current students?
One piece of advice I have for current students is that, be hungry for success and show your passion. Networking goes along way. It will not go unnoticed by the staff or the director of the program.

What are you up to now?
After graduating with my BSSW from Falk College at Syracuse University I decided to take a step back from social work and explore the world of beauty/cosmetics! I’ve been working full-time as a Bobbi Brown Ambassador at Lord & Taylor for about a year now. I definitely see my career blossoming with this brand!
How did you get involved with Liberty Partnerships?
I became involved with LPP my freshman year of high school. I was struggling in geometry so my mom looked into different resources. LPP seemed like the best match for me!
What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
My hands-down favorite activity I did through LPP was the trip to Boston we took! We were able to go to the aquarium and whale watching. It was a super fun experience! Other than that, I genuinely enjoyed the tutoring I received. The tutors were always so knowledgeable and fun, too! They never gave up no matter how many tries it took to get it right. It was always a great experience!
Describe how Liberty Partnerships shaped your life both in and out of the classroom
LPP helped shape my life in and out of the classroom in a variety of ways. In the classroom, I felt more at ease and able to absorb the information I was learning because I knew that if there was something I didn’t fully understand that the tutors at LPP would be able to help me get it right. I also learned to have more grace with myself. Outside of the classroom, LPP gave me the confidence to explore what I really wanted to do after high school. Mary Pat Clark helped arrange a few shadowing experiences for me at different social work agencies. Along with Mary Pat, the tutors also helped me perfect my college essays which granted me admission to all four schools I applied to – Syracuse University, New York University, Fordham University and SUNY Albany. I’m forever grateful!
What are you most proud of?
I’m most proud of the fact that I have come this far in life and have accomplished everything that I have (with a lot of help from others!). I can honestly say that I’m not sure it all would have been possible if not for LPP!
What advice do you have for current students
My biggest piece of advice is to never doubt yourself! There will be plenty of obstacles to come your way throughout life, but as long as you always believe in yourself, anything is possible. Also, DO NOT be afraid to ask for help! Help is almost always there so long as you ask for it.

I attended Nottingham High School and I graduated in 2018.
I am currently a sophomore studying Criminal Justice with a minor sociology at SUNY Oswego. I am also a Fashion Consultant at Oswego and hold the position of Building Manager for Campus Life at Oswego.
I became involved in LPP as sophomore when I transferred to Nottingham. I went out on my out and sought out tutoring and other regents help.
My favorite part about LPP was the summer program because I was able to meet people from other schools and do different programs that were scheduled. The most interesting thing I like about the program is that I was able to go New York City for the first time.
I believe that LPP has helped me build a structure for myself as a student and also knowing that there is support with anything you do in life, it’s on you and the decisions you choose.
The one thing I am most proud of myself is that I am able to be in position to break barriers in my family and being able to be a positive representation of the youth in Syracuse.
The advice I give to current students is to use the resources around you, take what you believe is yours, and never use fear as a barrier to your success.

My most favorite programs I attended through LPP was the summer camp at JCC and the Utica trip.
Describe how Liberty partnerships shaped your life both in and out of classroom?

I’m most proud of the relationships that I gained through LPP, I’ve met truly amazing people through the program and gained friendships that’ll last a lifetime.

What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
I loved the college trips, but my favorite was the Youth Summit trip to Utica. I went on almost every single trip and enjoyed each one of them. At my school I never really liked the people or the environment I was in, but with LPP the people I was around always had good energy.

Describe how Liberty partnerships shaped your life both in and out of classroom?
I went from this anxiety prone nobody to being noticed and cared for by these amazing people. I began to have self esteem and pride when I would get help with my education and see my grades go up. Because of LPP, I was able to graduate, be at the top 20% of my graduating class, take college courses, and feel at home in a place that was never home to me before. LPP gave me a place to go to during school time, to get away from people, where I could get help with homework, or work on my art, or just talk to Miss Kate when I needed someone to talk to. LPP creates relationships and a foundation for success for the future.
What are you most proud of?
All of my achievements through LPP, high school, and now college.

One of my friends invited me to the navigator’s office for lunch. When we arrived, the navigator began talking to me about the program; he explained the purpose of the program, activities the program hosts, and college visits in order to help students become more knowledgeable about what each college offers.
What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
I had the opportunity to attend the Youth Summit this past year. I really enjoyed getting away to a new city and meeting new people. I loved both keynote speakers and felt their messages were so relatable. And I enjoyed presenting our vision board; it was exciting to talk about the good things happening here. Another activity I enjoyed was a leadership overnight at Camp Onyahsa on Chautauqua Lake. The activities were lots of fun and it was great staying in a cabin with my friends.
Describe how Liberty Partnerships shaped your life both in and out of the classroom.
LPP has guided me to become self-disciplined in school. It has helped me learn study habits and guided me to stay disciplined and follow study schedules in order to prepare for exams and quizzes. This program has opened my eyes to see what JCC offers and how it is very affordable and provides the same prerequisite classes as any major school; however, the cost of JCC is drastically lower than any major state school. The navigators have helped me through life’s obstacles and guided me back on the right track to focusing on school and doing my best.
What are you most proud if?
I am most proud of my dedication to school, which led me to graduate high school in only three years. I also was nominated by the LPP team for a county wide leadership award and received the recognition in August. It was rewarding to have my hard work and leadership skills be recognized.
What advice do you have for current students?
To current high schoolers- ask questions when you are attending college visits!! Chances are, if you have the question, so does another student! Asking these questions and taking notes will help you when you are making final decisions about the college that you are going to attend!

I work as a Recovery Advocate at Phoenix House for teenagers suffering from drug abuse in Dallas, Texas.
How did you get involved with Liberty Partnerships?
My friend was involved in the program and invited me and I just stayed.
What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
We went to the Buffalo Museum and Science Center and saw an exhibit on Crime Scene Investigation. The college tours of Corning Community College and Monroe Community College helped me to see a life outside of high school.
Describe how Liberty Partnerships shaped your life both in and out of the classroom.
It helped me to keep my focus in the classroom and get my homework done on time because I hated homework. Outside the classroom, it helped with time management.
What are you most proud of?
Getting my dream job working with teenagers who have drug and alcohol substance abuse issues. I’m enrolling at Dallas Community College for spring classes to get my Counseling Degree in Substance Abuse to further my career.
What advice do you have for current students?
Don’t let high school be your whole life. Spread your wings and fly. Once you graduate, those people who dislike you or even hang out with will vanish as you grow as a person. Hang in there. Just remember, nothing is impossible if you have the mindset of I’m possible.

When did you graduate high school, and which high school did you attend?
June 2015 – Amsterdam High School
What are you up to now?
I recently graduated from Northeastern University with my Bachelors of Science in Behavioral Neuroscience. I am now attending graduate school at The Ohio State University, where I am pursuing a PhD in Biomedical Engineering. My current research is focused on looking into various aspects of brain cancer and metastases to the brain.
How did you get involved with Liberty Partnerships?
I was originally involved in LPP back when it was managed by Centro Cívico. However, when FMCC was able to receive a grant to manage LPP, I was able to get involved due to knowing the program staff from my involvement in the NYS Science and Technology Entry Program.
What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
Some of my favorite activities during LPP including going on college visits during our summer program trips. These trips were always so much fun. It was actually during one of those visits that I found out about Northeastern University and was able to learn about their Torch Scholars Program, which fully funded my undergraduate studies.
Describe how Liberty Partnerships shaped your life both in and out of the classroom.
LPP was my home while I was at school. I knew that no matter how hard school would get, I could go to the LPP office and get the help I needed. During high school, I moved out of New York for a year, and when I came back, I had to take the NYS Geometry Regents exam. I was worried because I had to take the exam a year after taking geometry. However, LPP helped me with giving me practice exams and one-on-one tutoring.
Aside from this, thanks to LPP, I was much more knowledgeable on how to apply to colleges, look for scholarships and analyze my financial aid packages better than most of my peers were.
LPP really prepared me for a successful life after high school and I am forever grateful to them. So much that I still make sure to maintain in contact with the staff because they have become such an integral part of my life.
What are you most proud of?
I am proud that I was able to never take “no” as an answer and always see my true potential. Due to that, I have been able to have a lot of success over the past 5 years. Some of the things I am most proud of include being the first in my family to graduate with a bachelors degree and pursue a PhD, as well as completing 3 internships at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where I was able to conduct cancer research.
What advice do you have for current students?
My advice to current students is to start early! People love to think that they have so much time, but the earlier you start, the better. Not to mention, you will also be less stressed later on.
Aside from that, APPLY TO SCHOLARSHIPS! There is so much money out there. Most of the times you can reuse essays for scholarship applications, so just put some time into writing a really good essay, and then you can tweak it for other scholarships.
Another tip I have is, do not be afraid to venture away from home. I left home for college and even flew out to California for my internships. It was the best thing I have ever done and I have grown so much from it.
2 more things. Make sure to network. Your network is everything. Lastly, if you don’t A-S-K, you won’t G-E-T. This is something I learned from a mentor and I have applied it to my everyday life. There is nothing wrong with asking for what you want. If you do not ask, you are already cutting yourself the chance.

Fordham University Liberty Partnerships Program Alumni
I graduated on June 17th, 2019 from Fordham High School for the Arts in Bronx NY. I am currently studying Psychology and Music at Oswego State University and getting myself adjusted to living far away from home. I learned about LPP during the summer after my 8th grade graduation. I signed up for their 5 week summer program called “Summer Quest”. My high school informed me about how they are partnered with Liberty Partnerships Program, so that is how I got involved with them.
Being a part of this program has given me so many wonderful opportunities, such as Shadow A Mentor Day, Summer Quest and the LPP Empire Promise Summit.
LPP has a great tutoring/homework help program that targets students in need of help in school. LPP provided me with Fordham college students to help tutor and mentor me, and it really improved my grades and self confidence in high school. The program also gives me a sense of home because I have always felt comfortable to go to their office and do my homework. The one thing that I am most proud of, as of today, is being open to receiving resources outside of my school. LPP is one of them, and I wouldn’t be where I am at without them.
My advice for the current students who are enrolled in LPP is to take every single opportunity given to you all. Especially when it comes to events such as College trips, STEM trips, etc. The program leaders are there to help you with everything that has to do with your high school education and college admissions.

Describe how Liberty partnerships shaped your life both in and out of classroom?
I have learned my skills and tips to learning to balance school, social life and job. One being the tip of getting an agenda and getting use to writing things down so I won’t forget. This really helped me improve my time management and organizational skills. Another were tips for dealing with stress which is something I look back on a stressful day. I as well still continue to set goals for myself and list/remind myself of my strengths and weaknesses. This really helps me focus on my goal and improve on my skills for my future career.
What are you most proud of?
I am really proud of the community service activities we participated in. It was great feeling to give a helping hand or make someone’s day when it came to making blankets for the animal shelter, writing jokes for the residents at Bristol and writing letters to the veterans. I am also proud of the goals I have accomplished thanks to the help and support of LPP such as Farmingdale State College acceptance as a student and graduating with a high grades.
What advice do you have for current students?
I would encourage them to take advantage of the various activities and resources LPP offers such as SAT Prep, college trips, summer program etc..

Efrain Guzman-Rodriguez
Columbia University Liberty Partnerships Program Alumni
“If it wasn’t for this program, I would have never finished high school. I would have given up.” Efrain Guzman-Rodriguez was one of the first high school students we worked with when our Achievement Initiative (AI) program opened in 2012. Efrain was an 11th grader at Bread and Roses Integrated Arts High School when he joined our school-based student support program. “Those first years I wouldn’t really care about going to school, to be honest with you. I was having trouble with school, issues outside of school, and never had anybody to talk to or help me out. After joining AI, I had a reason to go to school.”
Where is Efrain now?
Back with our program, of course. Efrain is completing a college internship with the Columbia LPP and is ready to graduate from SUNY Morrisville in December 2019 with his bachelor’s degree. “In high school, I always needed help and guidance, so I knew that when I got older and went to college, I wanted to give back.” Efrain decided that pursuing a psychology major in human services was a good way to give him the training in a career to give back to youth. While in college, he kept in touch with our Program Coordinator from his high school days and reached out to her to ask about internship opportunities with us. Efrain is now interning four days a week at two of our partner schools, facilitating young men’s groups, helping students set goals to complete their personal learning plans, inspiring students with tales of his own college experience, and providing mentorship to struggling students like Efrain once was.
High school was a struggle for Efrain until our program intervened. As he tells the story, he was really confused about what he wanted to do, was struggling with some classes, and was ready to give up. Then “some lady” walked into his class announcing a new program in the school and invited students to visit her in the school-based program office. The rest, as they say, is history. “Some lady” turned out to be the Program Coordinator who still maintains contact with Efrain years later.
We connected Efrain with two paid internships during his high school career, one with the legendary Apollo Theater on 125th Street in Harlem as an IT Intern, and the other with the Museum of Modern Art to create an original piece of modern art that was displayed at an international art show, and is still in MOMA’s possession to this day. Our program helped him with his class projects and papers, sat with him to work through college applications, essays and financial aid, and provided him with space in our office to do his homework. He says, “Motivational conversations with AI really helped me with my attendance and academics.”
The reach of our program’s impact didn’t stop with Efrain, however. Efrain is the youngest in his family, and the first to go to college. His personal growth, experience, and ultimate success in college motivated and inspired both of his older siblings to later pursue their education. His older sister went back to school and is in college studying to be a surgical technician, while also working as a dental assistant. His older brother got accepted into an art program and is now passionately pursuing his art career, going to galleries, and selling his work.
Efrain is beautiful proof that our program has profound impacts on not the just the students we serve in middle and high school, but also their families, and sometimes even the next generation of students who they return to work with as interns or as professionals themselves. We are proud of our school-based program that currently partners with three Harlem public schools to provide comprehensive support services. We staff a full-time, licensed social worker at each school, as well as graduate social work students and undergraduate mentors and tutors, most of whom are Opportunity Program students, including Efrain, and serve as ideal mentors to high school students who have similar background and experiences to their own. We are excited to see where Efrain goes next; he’s talking about becoming a guidance counselor, or “…maybe a Dean.” To Efrain, we say, go for it all: Dean, Principal, President! We’re rooting for you, and for every single student out there.

When did you graduate high school, and which high school did you attend?
I graduated from Frederick Douglass Academy II (FDA II) Secondary School in Harlem, New York in June 2019.
What are you up to now?
I currently attend SUNY College of Technology at Canton, working on a mechanical engineering bachelor’s degree in technology. I am also training to become a commissioned officer through the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (AROTC) with the Golden Knight Battalion hosted by Clarkson University. FROM THE FRONT!
How did you get involved with Liberty Partnerships?
I was always looking for as many opportunities as I could find. Through a connection with Columbia University and FDA II, I was introduced to LPP by my guidance counselor.
What are some of your favorite activities/programs that you did through Liberty Partnerships?
I’ve done many activities with LPP, like being a student advocate for Advocacy Day at the capitol of New York in Albany, and gift wrapped presents for children for Christmas, which I loved. However, my favorite event was going to the Empire Summit, which was amazing!
Describe how Liberty Partnerships shaped your life both in and out of the classroom.
If it wasn’t for LPP, I would have never enjoyed the “outside of city life” beyond NYC. Before LPP, I’ve always been surrounded by buildings and local trains. LPP took me under their wing and showed me that there is more to what I can experience, away from traffic noises.
What are you most proud of?
My proudest moment was getting to represent LPP and my high school at the capitol building in Albany.
What advice do you have for current students?
My advice to current students is always stay connected with the program as a whole. Whomever you meet, make sure they remember your name in the future. You never know when you will need assistance with anything, and you don’t know how helpful it is to gain that assistance from those who proudly associate themselves with LPP.
